OFFICIAL DESIGN CONTEST GUIDELINES

Enter for a chance to win our third graphic design contest! As a volunteer donation from the group founder, the winner of the contest will receive $150 and see their design sported across the state of Michigan & beyond.

We invite any member of the group to submit a design! This text will serve as the Official Design Contest Guidelines. It may be updated as we think of anything we missed, including specs. Let us know what questions you have, and good luck!

Below are the contest guidelines:

• No photos! Say what?! That’s right, and this is very important. Unfortunately, Aurora photos rarely print well on fabric. We are looking for a design without photography. Still interested? Please read on!
• Let’s show our Michigan Aurora Chasers pride! Think about what you would like to wear on a t-shirt, sweatshirt, hat or car decal, and create a cool design for the group! Please be prepared to submit your designs, due by Friday, January 10, 2025.
• When you’re ready to submit your design, please title the file with your full name and city and state of residence.
Example: John-Smith-GrandRapids-Michigan.jpg
• Join the Facebook Event to view updates, announcements and answers about this contest. It was extremely hard to keep track of those who were interested in the first contest. Please RSVP here: https://www.facebook.com/events/9069361136443363
• Use the words or the concept of Michigan Aurora Chasers in your design. If you decide to incorporate state symbolism like a map, it must include the Upper Peninsula. A new take on the Great Lakes map could also work, but be sure it represents the whole state.
• You can also add a tagline or phrase. If you do add a tagline, consider also submitting the design without words, in case we love the design but the words are not a great fit.
• Create your design at the highest resolution possible, using at least 300dpi. Drawings, paintings, graphic design, logos, original comics — these are great ideas. When possible, use vector graphics. Entries that are submitted on a small scale, such as thumbnail images, may be disqualified.
• Keep in mind that the natural gradient colors of Aurora can be difficult to reproduce when using a flexible printing service. For better printing, please avoid using actual Aurora photography.
• Please keep all raw files and original graphics, in case they are needed when we send the final design to print.
• The winner will receive a $150 prize, distributed after the contest with a digital transfer such as PayPal, Venmo or CashApp. We wish we could provide more, even to the runners-up, but we’re all volunteers here! We will never charge membership fees, and I hope the prize offers some encouragement and a nice reward for your participation.
• Our goal is to set up the apparel so that anyone who wants a shirt can order it at any time, through a print-on-demand website. All orders will be prepaid and delivered directly, and customer support will be left to the chosen print-on-demand vendor.
• If we use a website that requires us to set up a profit margin, the tiny profit margin will be donated back to the group to support group activities and opportunities like this, or to nonprofits within our shared interests, such as the International Dark Sky Association. This contest is not designed as a profitable activity, but we will manage all of the proceeds.
• Anyone entering a design agrees that they have the rights and permissions to use any of the photos, graphics or language involved in producing the design. No plagiarism please. Your design will be loved more if it is truly original!

Thank you for your participation! We wish you the best of luck!

Please note: We know it’s not ideal to ask graphic designers or artists to volunteer their time to create a contest piece, but almost all of the effort put in to the Michigan Aurora Chasers, even from the Admins and Group Experts, is volunteered time.
